The € 2.2 M Project, implies the implementation of Indra’s technology for utilities management in Umeme

The project reaffirms the Spanish IT company in South and East Africa, opening new doors to business in third countries
Indra was awarded a $2.2M contract through public tender to provide and implement its utilities management technology in Umeme, Ugandas sole power supplier. With this contract, Spains premier IT company and one of the most important in Europe, not only enters the countrys utilities market, but also reaffirms its presence in South and East Africas utilities markets, where the companys Open systems help manage electric companies in Ethiopia, Kenya, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Nairobis City water and Sewerage company. Furthermore, this project opens up the door to new business opportunities in countries such as: Tanzania, Rwanda, Malawi and Mozambique.
In the next 14 months, the Spanish IT company will implement its Open SGC and Open SGI systems in Umeme, a 300.000 customers’ supplier. Open SGC is designed to provide integral support to customer-management related processes. The system meets all the company’s needs in relation to its customers: it covers all the management processes of a cycle (reading, billing and collection) and supports the needs of regularised and liberalised markets. Open GSI is an incident management system, conceived to solve failures or incidents in the network reported by customers.
Umeme is run by the British company Globeleg, which manages electricity companies in emerging markets and belongs to The Commonwealth Development Corporation (CDC). Globeleg has a contract to operate the company altogether with Uganda’s government for 20 years.
Open Utilities
Open Utilities is Indra’s star technology to support the management of suppliers of water, sewerage, electricity, heat, gas and it’s the sector’s leading solution at world scale, with more than 110 clients in more than 30 countries among which some companies such as Union Fenosa (Spain), EDP (Portugal), Meralco (Philippines), UTE (Uruguay), KPLC (Kenia), ZSE (Slovakia), SME (Zshec Republic), Zesco (Zambia), Enel (Italy) or Bahrain’s Ministry of water and sewerage stand out. Besides this, this last project made Indra the first foreign company to implement a commercial management system in Arabian language.
Open products cover a business cycle of utilities companies thoroughly, from commercial management (Open SGC), distribution (Open SGD), Station operation (Open CEN) to energy markets (Open ME).
Air traffic
Indra’s presence in the country is complemented by a € 6.6M contract awarded this year with Uganda’s Civil Aviation Authorities to implement an air traffic control and surveillance in Entebbe airport, the country’s most important. It was the first contract awarded to the company in the African country.
Indra’s offer was the winner at an international tender, where one of the main requirements was a tight deadline, since the systems had to be operative on occasion of The Commonwealth’s Heads of States’ biannual meeting, to be held from 23rd to 25th of November in Kampala, the country’s capital, where the Queen also attended.
