The company was also awarded a contract to implement the surface surveillance and control system at Donetsk airport, Ucraine

Indra, the premier IT company in Spain and a leading IT multinational in Europe entered Mongolias market with a contract to modernise the countrys air traffic management and control systems.

The company will supply, implement and start up three surveillance and control systems and four radio navigation systems for the Mongolian Civil Aviation Authority (MCAA). On the other hand, Indra was also awarded the supply, implementation and start up of a surface control and surveillance system for Donetsk airport in Ucraine. The projects altogether exceed €12M and are to be concluded in a year. The contract for Mongolia consists of the development and implementation of three Mode-S Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radar systems (MSSR) in Muren, Ulaanbaatar and Bor-Undur. The systems, developed with proprietary technology, allow a direct data link with an aircraft and are superior to traditional systems in terms of data transmission capacity.

Indra will also implement four radionavigation systems (DVOR/DME) that will be located at Ulaanbaatar, Meren, Urgamal and Enderkhaan airports, in Mongolia. These systems emit a signal that allows aircrafts to check their position and the route for destination.

The modernisation of the systems will increase flight management capacity of controllers and will improve air traffic flow in one of the most important airways that link Europe with Asia. At the same time, the control of aircrafts approaching the airport of the country’s capital, Ulaanbaatar, will also undergo significant improvements.

This contract reinforces Indra’s position in Asia, with recent awards for different projects in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and China where Indra has been actively present for more than 10 years.

Besides this, the company will implement a surface control and surveillance system at the Donetsk airport in Ucraine which will allow controllers to visualise the movements of aircraft, vehicles or obstacles in the runways regardless of weather conditions. It consists of an easy-to-use surface movement radar (SMR) with a high resolution of approximately 6 metres. The radar is very reliable and low maintenance which significantly reduces life cycle costs.

The project in Ucraine adds up to other contracts for the implementation of this system in Lithuania and Algeria at the same time it reinforces Indra´s position in the surface control and surveillance business segment that is becoming in high demand.

Indra reinforces its offer

The air traffic management system to be implemented by Indra in Mongolia includes radio navigation systems, developed by Indra’s Australian subsidiary. The company’s experience is acknowledged worldwide since its systems are capable of determining the angle and distance of an aircraft in reference to a point on the earth. The information provided by these systems allows aircraft to adjust their route accurately. The radio navigation complement Indra´s air surveillance and navigation systems offer.

Indra is the premier Information Technology company in Spain and a leading IT multinational in Europe and Latin America. It is ranked as the second European company in its sector according to stock market capitalisation, and it is one of the three Spanish companies with more investment in R&D. In 2007, revenues reached € 2.167 M, of which a third came from the international market. The company employs more than 24.000 professionals and has clients in more than 90 countries.
