The study aims at the restoration of the old tram network which is financed by Panama’s government and by the United Nations Development Programme
Indra, the premier IT company in Spain and a leading IT multinational in Europe, was chosen through international tender launched by the government of Panama through the Oficina para la Restauración y Puesta en Valor del Conjunto Monumental Histórico del Casco Antiguo de la Ciudad de Panamá for consultancy services on accessibility, public transport and restoration of the tram network in the old quarter of Panama City.
The study aims at the integration of this historic area into Panama City with an adequate public transport system both unified and adequate to the urban standards of the area. The project must favour exclusion of buses since they are not compatible with the area. Besides this, the restoration of the old tram network, the design of new routes, lines and connection of the means of transportation of the metropolitan area which are currently in the planning stage will also be taken into account.
The project includes the design of a global strategy for accessibility to the old quarter of the city. It is also considering proposals of traffic and signage, parking restructuring and pedestrianisation.
The service also contemplates the connection of the old quarter with tourist attractions and relevant urban areas such as the Avenida de Balboa, the city’s most modern and widest avenue, the picturesque Calzada de Amador or Causeway, lined by palm trees and with magnificent views of the Channel.
The project will be supported by highly-qualified Indra professionals with experience in restructuring and rationalisation of public transport in big cities such as: Lima, Buenos Aires, Santiago de Chile and Barcelona.
World heritage
Panama’s old quarters was declared historic monumental ensemble of the Republic of Panama and in 1997 was also proclaimed UNESCO World Heritage since it was the first European settlement on the Pacific coast of America and it is an example of European urban design in America as well as an unusual blend of architectonic styles. The buildings show Spanish, French, Caribbean and a US features as well as reminiscences of the different epochs when they arrived to the Panamanian isthmus.
