Indra to implement the romanian air traffic management system for €26 M

The Romanian provider of air navigation services, ROMATSA, has selected Indra to implement a latest-generation air traffic management system that will organise aircraft movements in the country's entire airspace. The total value of this contract is €26 M.

The Executive Vicepresident of ROMATSA Aleodor Fräncu signed the contract with Indra Executive Vicepresident Rafael Gallego on 29 July at the ROMATSA headquarters. The signature took place in the presence of Cristian Ghibu, Transport Secretary of State of Rumanía, and a representative of the Spanish Embassy Emilio Guerra.

Indra will equip Bucharest Control Centre, as well as four approach facilities and total of 15 control towers with the latest-generation air traffic management system.

The new system includes the advanced functionality of the iTEC platform, which integrates the latest advances in interoperability, a key element in the initiative to build the future Single European Sky. The company is developing the iTEC technology for the main European air navigation suppliers, including AENA (Spain), DFS (Germany), NATS (United Kingdom), and LVNL (Netherlands).

This advanced air traffic management system will also incorporate the flight plan management technology developed by Indra for EUROCONTROL, the highest air safety authority in Europe. This solution has been in use since 2008 in the Maastricht Upper Area Control Centre (MUAC), from which it organises the upper airspace of Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg and western Germany. It has, therefore, been successfully proven in one of the busiest air traffic areas in the world.

This flight plan management solution makes it possible to control air traffic very precisely by using a 4D-trajectory-based technology (3 Dimensions + Time). It also makes it possible to manage the airspace in a highly flexible and dynamic way, responding to changes in traffic demand, weather conditions or areas reserved for military air traffic.

Likewise, the system incorporates iTEC-CWP (Controller Working Position), a control position already adopted by DFS and NATS in their systems and which is backed by a de-facto standard for the controller working position.

In addition, as part of this project, Indra will also supply the system support tools to ROMATSA, including a simulation system for training controllers.

With the modernisation of this infrastructure, ROMATSA will be prepared to meet future European standards and regulations for air traffic control systems. This technology will also enable it to define more efficient (performance-driven) routes, with the accompanying savings in fuel and environmental efficiency that this represents.
