  • Indra solves the cross-border sector delegation challenge with RoleRoaming™

Indra launches the RoleRoaming™ feature as part of the GAREX ED-137 compliant VoIP-based Voice Communication Control System (VCCS) available to order now. RoleRoaming™ enables flexible delegation of sectors across control centers, which is a cornerstone of the Functional Airspace Block (FAB) concept being implemented in Europe and around the world.

In the interest of interoperability, Indra will also make the RoleRoaming™ available for inclusion in the ED-137 standard and available to Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs).

A Functional Airspace Block (FAB) is an airspace block based on operational requirements and established regardless of national boundaries. FABs require not only common rules and procedures, but also a common set of international standards.

The latest version of ED-137 ensures that VoIP Radio resources can be shared between controllers at any site, however still does not provide the full set of functionality necessary for ground-ground communication in order to coordinate cross-border airspace management.

With the Indra RoleRoaming™ service, there is no longer a need for the caller to be concerned about – or even aware of – the controller’s physical location. RoleRoaming™ makes it possible to contact a role regardless of where the function is being performed.

But RoleRoaming™ doesn’t stop with that. The Indra RoleRoaming™ service allows any controller at any center to assume any role. Handover of sector jurisdiction and responsibility – whether during regular shift changes, re-sectorization or complete site switch-over – is secured by RoleRoaming™.  The automated workflow process demands positive acknowledgement of transferred responsibilties and speeds the process of sector delegation.

Integrating the GAREX VCCS with an Automation and Flight Data Processing (FDP) makes re-sectorization even more efficient. Changes in the VCCS and FDP system can be synchronized automatically and according to pre-defined role scenarios, even across multiple sites and national borders.
