Ok Glass, Start the revolution!

PorÁngel Bonet- 13 / 02 / 2014

This week I was finally able to test Google Glass. Not only that, I even gave a conference wearing the glasses (thanks to the company www.itglas.es). I'll sum up my experience in one word: MIND-BLOWING.

In my opinion it's the most powerful technological revolution since the cellphone, far superior to all the devices designed by my beloved Steve Jobs. You'll probably think I'm exaggerating, but Google Glass will enable us to do things with technology in situations hitherto unimaginable.

It's only natural for most people not to imagine the revolution that GG will bring about. I can imagine when the washing machine or the icebox were invented, people's reaction before using them. They probably thought it was something silly. Or, as it happens, the car itself, which many businessmen at the time believed would only be sold in the hundreds, until Henry Ford came around and revolutionized the industry and provided human beings with a new way to travel.

Well, GG will provide our hyper connected society with a new way to “merge” with mobile technology, and specifically with the Internet. Before going on to analyze some of its applications, the first thing you find surprising when you show GG to people is their eagerness to try them on immediately. Next, they all smile and find the experience mind-blowing, and no one can resist having a photo taken with them. I had never witnessed this reaction before, not with the cellphone, the DVD, the iPhone or the iPad. Not even with the iPod… That's why I believe it will be a revolution.

My only question mark is the price. €600 can be a bit stiff, but if this hasn't been the case with the iPhone, it won't be with the GG either. We'll soon see what happens, as it's set to be released in Spain in 2014!

The main basic applications of GG are: Taking photos, recording videos, checking the weather and the time, running a search on the Internet, GPS navigator, sending messages and making video calls, sharing stuff on social networks, hundreds of new apps.

When I start imagining the applications, it's mind-boggling. Listed below are some of the ones that are already being beta tested throughout the world:

  • Winning any card or chess game, by suggesting the best move. (Players wearing GG have already been denied access at some casinos.)
  • Surgical operation support, providing vital live information on the patient.
  • Imagining new spaces in real time. We will be able to decorate our homes by looking at the space we want to decorate and placing the objects “virtually”.
  • Buying guide. We will be able to move around any department store or hypermarket without getting lost and finding right away the products we're looking for.
  • Face recognition. Applications like Nametag provide information on the people around us.
  • Tourist guide. In any city or museum, it will guide us and provide all the information on what we're looking at.
  • Remote sex. Probably one of the most controversial innovations, we will be able to enjoy experiences with our partner without being together, simply connected…
  • As witnesses of criminal acts. The New York Police Department will start wearing them to record all of their actions live.
  • Smart commercial agenda for salespeople. The definite boom of CRM. Our salespeople will be guided by an agenda and the basic contents to be offered for each visit or negotiation.
  • Etc.

In short, anything you do in your everyday life, without having to use your hands and with a powerful visual and voice recognition system.

There are just a few months left before our lives take a qualitative leap forward toward a smarter, simpler and more enjoyable world.
