The solution uses fiber optics to automatically capture and geolocate disturbances in the environment in real time and uses artificial intelligence techniques to convert signals into alarms and facilitate their management in an agile way.
Onesait Oil&Gas Sensing, the fiber optic-based system for the automatic detection of threats and leaks in water and hydrocarbons transport networks of Minsait, an Indra company, today received the 2019 enerTIC award for the “Smart Product” category.
The goal of the enerTIC Awards, organized by the enerTIC Platform for the past eight years, is to give recognition to the organizations and managers that drive energy efficiency and sustainability in the digital age, through innovation and technology.
The results of the pilot test developed by Minsait at its test center in Guadalajara have shown the solution's ability to significantly reduce detection and classification times of threats and leaks in pipelines (gas, oil and water pipelines). It is a fully automatic system, available 24/7, which requires no transportation for monitoring assets and prevents human errors and false alarms.
According to the data obtained by the company, its monitoring system for gas, oil and water pipelines makes it possible to reduce losses caused by accidents, leaks or intrusions by up to 90%. Early warning and automated operation mean that response times are minimized, as well as controlling and avoiding future operating costs.
Another important benefit is the reduction of CO2 air emissions associated with conventional surveillance work carried out by air and land patrols by 75%.
Recent studies indicate that more than 90% of the leaks in the hydrocarbon transport networks in Europe in recent years could have been avoided using automatic detection systems such as Minsait's. Likewise, more than 40% of drinking water worldwide is lost to leaks, breakages, breakdowns or undetected fraud.
Agile management
Onesait Oil&Gas Sensing is part of Minsait´s solution suites for the hydrocarbon and utilities sectors and uses optical fiber to capture and geolocate disturbances in the environment in real time that indicate the existence of imminent threats to infrastructure or leaks in the pipeline. Through artificial intelligence techniques, the system is able to convert these optical signals into alarms and classify them to expedite their management from a computer or mobile device.
The project has been carried out using Agile methodologies with a multidisciplinary team. It is a method that enables deliveries in short periods of time and also makes it possible to detect any type of error early, which speeds up testing and development times.
Onesait Oil&Gas Sensing complements the capabilities of Onesait Oil&Gas Environment, the system developed by Minsait and Repsol that detects small volumes of hydrocarbons on the surface of the sea in a few minutes without human intervention.
The Technical Committee of the enerTIC Platform assessed the 66 projects submitted and selected the winners in each of the award categories, based on the following criteria: degree of applied innovation, usability of Information and Communication Technologies, impact on the reduction of energy consumption and CO2 emissions, setting an example or applicability in other organizations/environments and the use of metrics and improvement indicators.
enerTIC's mission is to contribute to the development of the transformation potential of Information and Communication Technologies in the field of energy efficiency in Spain, with the support of associated companies and public institutions, to foster a more competitive and sustainable economy.
