Indra displays the progress made by Europe’s largest defence-related cyber situational awareness project

The Indra-led ECYSAP (European Cyber Situational Awareness Platform), one of the most significant cyber defence projects on the continent, unveiled its progress at FEINDEF during a workshop that brought together some of the leading experts and the most ambitious projects in this still-incipient field of defence, in which Indra is positioning itself as a global leader.

The event was attended by NATO’s Allied Command Transformation and the coordinators of European innovation projects such as the CIDCC (Cyber and Information Domain Coordination Center), Pandora, Cyber4de, ESC2 and EU-Guardian. These last two projects, related to strategic command and control and the application of artificial intelligence to detect and respond to cyber attacks, are also led by Indra.

All of these experts shared the work they have performed in the field of cyber defence in order to detect synergies and potential areas for collaboration in which the initial developments secured in the ECYSAP project can be applied, particularly certain tools that apply advanced analytics to help identify and assess risks of cyber attacks and estimate their spread and possible impact.

It took place in the presence of representatives of the European Commission and the European Defence Agency (EDA), as well as the Ministries of Defence of the four countries taking part in the project (Spain, France, Italy and Estonia). It was also attended by representatives of the ECYSAP project consortium, made up of leading organizations from the European cyber defence market, industry, universities and SMEs from within the sector in these four countries. 

ECYSAP addresses the development of a national and European platform for the real-time acquisition of cyber situational awareness in military operations. For this purpose it implements visualization and detection capabilities in order to respond to cyber threats and provide support for decision-making during missions. Indra expects to have an initial version of the ECYSAP platform operational by the end of the year.

The project involves the design of an FMN (Federated Mission Network) service that complies with this standard to promote and permit interoperability and cooperation between different military entities by providing a common framework for communication and data management, thus facilitating the real-time coordination and exchange of critical information. ECYSAP could therefore be installed within an accredited FMN node.

The project is funded by the European Defence Industrial Development Program (EDIDP) and supported by the European Commission and the Ministries of Defence of the participating states through the European Defence Agency (EDA). 

This project seeks to reinforce European capabilities in the defence of cyberspace, the fifth defence domain (along with the sea, air, land and space), which is becoming increasingly important due to hyperconnectivity and the rapid digitization of the Armed Forces and society.
