  • The IT company will implement an autonomic data processing centre for support and will install the information system of the labs.
  •  The projects are within two contracts out of six awarded by the Asturias principality in order to equip the future hospital with cutting-edge systems and technology infrastructure.

Indra, the premier IT company in Spain and a leading IT multinational in Europe, was awarded two contracts for € 13 Million Euros to computerize Asturias’ new Central University Hospital (HUCA). The projects are within two contracts out of six awarded by the Regional Minister of Public Administration and Government Spokesperson in order to equip the future hospital with cutting-edge systems and technology infrastructure. Professionals of the company’s Software Lab in Gijon will cooperate in the development of the project.

The contracts include the implementation of a data processing centre for autonomic support and a lab management system. The centre will not be located in the same facilities where the central CPD is in order to increase the security levels of all the information systems belonging to the Asturias Principality, regardless of the sector. Besides this, Indra will undertake the management of the support data processing centre and will install the necessary infrastructure for its start up (hardware, software and lines of communications).

On the other hand, the IT company will get a new information system underway for the global management of the lab processes of the new centre ranging from the pre-analytic stages including all areas (haematology, microbiology, biochemistry, immunology, molecular oncology, cytogenetics, urgencies and toxicology). The system will also be integrated into referenced external labs and with the rest of the applications of the Information and management system of Primary Care. Therefore, analytical tests performed either in external labs or in the hospital will be automatically included in the patient's medical records for use by the hospital health professionals and the primary care centres the patient attends.

The new Central University Hospital of Asturias (HUCA) is the most significant project carried out by the regional government in the health care sector. It is expected to be inaugurated in 2011 and will employ 5,500 professionals including 900 doctors; 3,000 nurses and auxiliaries to supervise over 1,200 hospital beds, 200 outpatient services and 36 operating theatres.

Leadership in health care systems

Nowadays, over 32 million people in more than 10 countries benefit from Indra’s solutions and systems for the health sector. The company’s solutions are in use by more than 100,000 professionals in over 5,600 health centres and hospitals making 500,000 daily medical appointments possible.

Indra’s technologies and knowledge applied to health are based on its health solutions portfolio which specialises in Telemedicine, digital Imaging, electronic prescription or electronic medical records, among others. This platform is the fruit of cumulative experience in the development of projects for private and public sectors, at both national and international levels which turns into an opportunity thanks to systems interoperability among different players within the health sector.

Regarding the electronic medical records we can mention Diraya, the avant-garde information system developed by Andalusia’s Health Services (SAS), which facilitated the implementation of digital health records in the region; IANUS, the sanitary platform that integrates the Electronic Clinical Records of the Servizo Galego de Saúde (SERGAS) or Abucasis, which enabled unification of all the information of the medical records of the Valencia community.

The company also leads the implementation of the electronic prescription in Spain, where besides the project currently under way in Asturias, it has successfully implemented it in Aragon, Cantabria, Madrid, Murcia, Valencia, Galicia, the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla and Andalusia. On the other hand, the IT company is technology partner of SESCAM in the development of the YKONOS project, the digital medical imaging system of Castilla-La Mancha.

Indra holds a significant position in the implementation and management of multichannel information services which use internet, mobile technology and access points to the health care services in Andalusia, Madrid and Valencia. It also leads health innovation programmes in Spain and in the European Union in sectors such as clinical management applied to patients with chronic diseases and teleassistance
Indra is the premier Information Technology company in Spain and a leading IT multinational in Europe and Latin America. It is ranked as the second European company in its sector according to investment in R&D with nearly € 500 M during the last three years. In 2009 revenues reached € 2,513 M of which a 40% came from the international market. The company employs more than 30,000 professionals and has clients in more than 100 countries.
