Indra, the premier IT Company in Spain and a leading IT multinational in Europe, will implement a multilateration system to control aircrafts on runways or other areas of Vilnius airport (Lithuania). Oro Navigacija, Lithuania's air services provider, commissioned Indra this project with an execution period of a year approximately.
The new multilateration system complements the surface movement radar (SMR) and an Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control System (A-SMGCS) implemented by Indra in 2008. These solutions enhance the management of aircrafts besides adding fluency and safety to the movements. This way landing and take-off can be more controlled especially in adverse weather and low visibility conditions, which increase punctuality and improves the air traffic management of Vilnius airport.
Indra's multilateration system determines the position of the aircraft and identifies it using the messages the aircraft sends automatically. The messages are detected by receptor stations located along the perimeter of the airport. Through algorithms which calculate the differences of arrival times to each station the exact location of the aircraft can be accurately identified.
Besides the implementation of this system in Barcelona airport by Indra we should mention other international contracts for multilateration systems and Wide Area Multilateration systems (MLAT/WAM) awarded in Latin America.
The contract reinforces Indra's close relation with Oro Navigacija as its technology provider. The company undertook the deployment of the radar stations network in charge of controlling the country's air space. For this reason it implemented three new stations equipped with associated primary radars (PSR) and secondary radars Mode S (MSSR) in Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga. In addition to this, Indra equipped Vilnius airport with the above-mentioned systems (SMR and A-SMGCS).
