- The new contract joins a previous agreement signed last year by the IT company to implement the ticketing systems on the railway network of the capital
- This new project reaffirms Indra’s position in the country and its progress in the Asian market
A consortium led by Indra- the premier IT company in Spain and a leading IT multinational in Europe- also comprising Malaysia’s Iris, has won the design, supply, implementation and start-up of the contactless ticketing technology for Kuala Lumpur Monorail in Malaysia for € 4.4 M.
This project joins the previous contract awarded to the IT multinational in 2010 to implement the access control and ticketing systems on the Kelana Jaya and Ampang railway lines in Malaysia’s capital. This way, Indra consolidates its position in the country and its progress in the Asian market with outstanding contracts last year.
The company will equip the Kuala Lumpur monorail with a full-service ticketing system which includes access control systems and automated and manual ticket sales devices, among other equipment. The new technology will be integrated with the one the company is implementing on the other two railway lines of the city.
The new solution will be fitted out with contactless technology. The train tickets issued will be multiple-trip smart cards for regular users, and tokens, widely used in Asia for one-way trips. Both formats speed up the entire transit process as the tickets are validated via radio frequency using contactless access control systems.
With this contract Indra makes progress on its goal of increasing its presence in emerging Asian markets, reinforcing its position in the region’s ticketing segment. Besides the above-mentioned contract in Malaysia, the company was awarded several contracts to implement its technology on the Calcutta Metro, Mumbai Monorail and Underground system and in the new light rail underground train to Delhi airport last year.
Indra is one of the world leading companies in the ticketing sector with references such as the metro networks of Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Athens, Chile or Shanghai, the Suburban Railway of the Mexico City Metropolitan Area, the Metro of Austin (Texas) or St Louis light rail, in USA.
Progress in Asia
Indra has recently signed important contracts in Asia other than the above-mentioned ticketing systems. In the sector of air traffic, Indra was awarded the modernisation of the control centres of Xian and Chengdu in China which coordinate the upper airspace of eight provinces covering an area similar to Western Europe in extension. In addition to this, China's Civil Aviation authority commissioned a surveillance network to cover 60% of the country's air space. It will also implement, this time in India, nine radar stations and will equip 38 airports with its air traffic management systems, which represent the most significant contract in terms of supplies awarded in the last years worldwide.
Indra is also upgrading the Bank of Bangladesh’s management systems. In addition to this, it is also in charge of Meralco’s global technology outsourcing, the largest electricity company of Philippines and provides services to the main companies of the country’s energy sector such as: Visayas Electric Corporation (VECO), the second distribution company of the country; Cepalco; National Power Corporation (NPC), second in power generation; or Energy Development Corporation (EDC), the largest company of geothermal power; among others.
Regarding Public Administrations, the Spanish company finished a project for the Supreme Court of Philippines to modernise justice administration in the country.
