- “Guttmann, neuropersonalTrainer®” is a state-of-the-art cognitive e-rehabilitation platform which enables the provision of neurorehabilitation services in an intensive, customized, controlled, efficient and sustainable way.
- The project, led by Institut Guttmann, is a model of joint innovation at national level and is based on Knowledge Economy as a key aspect of evolution and innovation for Institut Guttmann as well as for the other institutions and universities who participate and contribute the necessary knowledge-different subjects-to address in an efficient and cost-effective way a real need of a large amount of people aiming at making more with less
- Indra will contribute its broad experience in the implementation and integration of health solutions by introducing this new cognitive e-rehabilitation system across the globe
- Acquired brain injury (traumatic brain injury and Ictus), dementia, mental diseases and disorders during child development are among those pathologies with a larger global impact on world economy and they all occur with cognitive disorders
Indra and the Institut Grumann have signed a collaboration agreement this morning to introduce “Guttmann, NeuroPersonalTrainer®”, a state-of-the-art cognitive e-rehabilitation platform, in the international market. This system sets a new modality of neuropsychological rehabilitation regarding cognitive decline associated to pathologies like dementia, aging, mental health and disorders during child development in an intensive, customised, controlled way but at the same time capable of generating knowledge, sustainable and cost-effective for the social agents involved.
A matter of public health
Cognitive decline has been detected to be the main cause of impairments as reported by the WHO. 3 out of the 5 main health issues in developed countries for the next 20 years are associated to cognitive disorders.
- Acquired Brain Injury: It is estimated that in the European Union the amount of new patients with cognitive disorders exceed 1, 200 000.
- Aging: Life expectancy in Europe is over 75 years and when compared to dementia in that age range it represents a frequency of occurrence similar to that of an epidemic.
- Mental disorders: In Europe more than 250,000 new Schizophrenia cases are diagnosed each year.
Besides these three diseases, in adult age, we should add the impact of intellectual disability and cognitive disorders during childhood where a significant percent of school failure in Europe has underlying cognitive impairments of different etiology.
A model of technology transfer
“Guttmann, NeuroPersonalTrainer®”is the result of a research project which started in 2003 under the name of PREVIRNEC® and was developed by Institut Guttmann, Universitat Rovira i Virgili and The Biomedical Engineering Research Centre (CREB) of the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC).
The solution so far has allowed treatment of over 800 patients with more than 20 platforms installed at the Institut Guttmann and at other assistance centers and over 100 patients have received clinical assistance at home. In total, 32,000 sessions have been delivered including more than 210,000 activities with results showing that 80% of patients have significantly improved in terms of attention, memory and executive functions.
This effective and proven model offers an efficient solution for public and private healthcare as well as for the provision of cognitive stimulation and neuropsychological rehabilitation services, being it through e-rehabilitation facilities in general hospitals, outpatient surgery centers, extended care facilities, nursing homes or the patient’s home. All the cases present a distinguishing feature which sets the solution aside form the rest: the capacity to generate knowledge.
“Guttmann, NeuroPersonalTrainer®” employs the latest findings in cognitive neuroscience and incorporates cutting-edge solutions of information technologies and communication and artificial intelligence such as KDD (Knowledge Discovery Data) and Data Mining which allows automatic customization of the system in real time according to each patient’s needs.
