  • ABUCASIS, the electronic record management system developed by Indra for the Valencia Health Agency, will incorporate new developments which will facilitate use and integration with national and European healthcare systems, thus improving patient care and cost reduction
  • ABUCASIS contains the medical electronic records of over 98% of Valencia's population, gives service to all primary care centres of the region and outpatient services and is of benefit to more than 15,000 users daily

Indra, the premier IT company in Spain and a leading IT multinational in Europe, will modernise the ABUCASIS electronic record management system developed by Indra for the Autonomous Region of Valencia in order to adapt this tool to the current needs of the medical staff and to facilitate access to the patient's records not only contained in Valencia's healthcare agency systems but also those which come from national and European systems. The project has an execution period of three years.

Indra will upgrade the system with important technology components to improve ergonomics (access to information will be easier and faster) and technology resources consumption (upgrades will not add additional expenses in infrastructures or systems). The implementation entails over 50,000 hours exclusively dedicated to the evolution of the system and a similar amount for the maintenance of the application, as well as training of professionals and support.

For starters, a consultancy phase has been created to check all the ambulatory care processes. The results appear in a model and in a proposal of upgrades to be implemented during the next two years. The first batch of upgraded components will be ready for use in the first semester of 2012.

Indra, in line with AVS, is making strong efforts to make sure the tool is adapted to patient care processes and then make it feasible. In this sense the principles of the Microsoft Health Common User Interface study have been adapted to the scenario of Valencia with the objective of analysing the safety conditions of the medical organizations worldwide, including medical attention criteria and offering health information in such a way that it prevents errors. Besides this, a random selection of final users participated in work sessions in order to contribute evaluations about the suitability of the way the medical information is presented.

The project seeks to add value to patient care management so that medical professionals can have access to the necessary information fast and efficiently, with advances in the integration and interoperability features with other systems. We should also mention that ABUCASIS can make available the patient's data regarding hospital procedures, complementary tests requested at any other level and even biometric measures coming from the homes of patients.

The upgrades implemented by Indra also include a new desktop for the professional as an easy and visual way to organise daily activities with a notifications box to facilitate patient follow up. In addition, the project significantly upgrades the search of information in the medical records and allows the application of innovative procedures.

On the other hand, the new system relies on cutting-edge design strategies for expeditious management of large amounts of information structures as those treated in medical environments.

Indra developed ABUCASIS to unify ambulatory information of medical records of the autonomous region of Valencia and includes the electronic records of 98% of Valencia's  population. It gives service to all primary care centres of the region and to outpatient services and is of benefit to more than 15,000 users daily. Currently it is prepared to manage 1051 centres which depend of 24 health departments, 5.1 million patients (98% of Valencia's population) and nearly five million medical records.

Collaboration in health

Indra has collaborated with autonomous region of Valencia for years in the sector of health and that is how ABUCASIS was born as well as other developments which have placed the region at the forefront of technology innovation in healthcare. As an example of this we can mention GAIA, a system which incorporates all services associated to electronic prescription; or the system of electronic medical records of the Valencia Health Agency which has enabled health centres of the region to access citizens' information from any place where they are being treated and at the same time, make available the necessary information via different channels such as mobile phones or the citizens website of the Regional Health Department. Besides this, there other important references such as the Nominal Vaccination Registry or the food safety system of the Directorate-General for Public Health.

Thanks to this, the autonomous region of Valencia is at the head of the interoperability project of the Digital clinical record within the National Healthcare system (HCDSNS) which offers medical staff and patients access to the clinical information from any location inside national territory. In fact, Valencia is the first autonomous region of Spain which offers a higher volume and variety of documents for access in other regions, with nearly 3.5 million reports integrated in the central node of the Ministry of Health, Social Policy and Equality, an organ which promotes this initiative included in its action plan for eHealth in Europe.

Finally, the autonomous region of Valencia will be the first community in Spain to integrate the electronic management of all the laboratory services thanks to the project Indra has undertaken in collaboration with Cointec from Alicante for the Valencian Health Agency.
