Adif has awarded the temporary joint venture consortium comprising Alstom (35%), Indra (35%) and SANJOSE Constructora (30%) a contract worth 64 million euros for the installation of the Protection and Safety Systems in the 12 tunnels along the Pajares loop line.
This 49 km stretch, which connects the towns of La Robla (Leon province) and Pola de Lena (Asturias province) is part of the future Madrid-Asturias High Speed Line (LAV, in its Spanish initials), which will substantially improve the connection between Castile and the north of Spain. The project includes, among other items, the Pajares 2-tube tunnel, 25 km in length, the second-longest rail tunnel in Spain.
Under this contract, the JV consortium will supply the safety systems for the 12 tunnels. These will include the power and lighting systems of the Firefighting Stations and outdoor huts, fire detection and extinguishing, communications and control, sensor system, ventilation, emergency signaling and ancillary civil engineering work, as well as the integration of the entire system in the remote control (SCADA) system.
Alstom España and Indra have extensive experience in similar projects in the Spanish rail network. Specifically, the infrastructure teams of both companies have taken on the task of equipping the electromechanical installations of the 32 tunnels associated with the Ourense-Santiago line, as well as the installation and maintenance of the four tunnels on the Madrid-Valladolid line, among which is the Guadarrama Tunnel, the longest in Spain. Likewise, Alstom España and Indra have jointly installed the safety systems in the tunnels on the high-speed line between Antequera and Granada.
SANJOSE Constructora has carried out several sections of the main High-Speed lines in Spain (Madrid - Zaragoza - Barcelona - French Border, Madrid - Valencia, Madrid -Galicia, Madrid - Asturias, etc.), among which we would highlight the section from Contreras Reservoir - Villargordo del Cabriel, one of Spain's most impressive rail projects (85% of the route consists of 3 tunnels and 3 viaducts, among the latter the Contreras Viaduct, which with its 261 meter span, is Europe's rail viaduct with the widest arch and holds the all-time record in Spain). The project has won several prizes, in particular a Special Mention and the 11th International Alcantara Bridge Prize for “combining unique and singular technical features that make it one of the greatest engineering works of recent times, in addition to the use of innovative techniques of execution, the clean lines of the structure and the beauty and integration in the landscape".
Pajares Loop Line
The Pajares Loop Line, with a length of 49 km, will optimize the high-speed and freight traffic between Leon and Asturias, providing the best service to the general public, companies and rail operators. It will reduce the travel time on the Madrid-Valladolid-León-Oviedo/Gijón route and will contribute to the rail link with the mountain passes of Asturias; it will boost capacity and regularity, as the entire section will be twin track; and it will enhance comfort, as optimal running conditions will be established.
