The Korean Airport Corporation has implemented Indra’s InNOVA Tower System. The new system is part of an ongoing modernization and expansion project at Jeju International Airport.
The tower system, commonly called Airport Surface Detection Equipment (ASDE) in South Korea, ensures safe and efficient ground operations, providing air traffic controllers with a complete overview of aircraft, vehicles and other moving objects. Indra’s system stands out by offering the most advanced automation and safety alerts and is best-in-class when it comes to reducing disturbances caused by false targets.
“Our ground surveillance system is already in use at Incheon Airport in Seoul, as well as in many of the busiest airports in the world. At Incheon we proved that we manage to minimize downtime during installation, and that was important to this project”, says Tomas Lubeck, International Sales Manager at Indra. “The airport is very busy as Jeju island is the most popular holiday destination in Korea.”
In fact, the airline route from Jeju to Seoul has for several years been the busiest in the world with 85,880 flights in 2021, equivalent to a daily average of 235 flights and 48,000 seats.
Indra is supplying KAC with the InNOVA Tower System, 13 controller working positions and a surface movement radar from Terma. The delivery also includes a contingency system. The contract was signed as a consortium between Indra, Hanjin Information Systems and Telecommunications Co, responsible for infrastructure, and ERA which is providing the multilateration (MLAT) sensor system.
