Description of the Project
Funded within the framework of Horizon 2020, “Reduced separations and improved efficiency based on Vhf cOmmunICations over LEO satEllites” (VLD2 – VOICE Project) will demonstrate VHF systems providing voice and datalink Air Traffic Services (ATS) over LEO satellites, to potentially enable traffic in oceanic and remote airspace to be handled as in a continental one, and current separation could be reduced without compromising safety. In addition, VOICE project will perform some cross-border operations between adjacent Flight Information Region, FIR, belonging to different countries. Demonstration will cover operations in CANARIAS FIR and SAL FIR with air traffic controllers communicating in real time with aircraft at distances bigger than 800NM.
Demonstration exercises will use these satellite-based Communication and Surveillance, technologies as support of the feasibility of the Air Traffic Management Data Service Provider, ADSP, concept by permitting controllers sited far away of the airspace where a flight is flying to provide Air Traffic Management, ATM, services.
The following Use Cases will be studied within the demonstration activities:
- Use Case 1: Use of satellite VHF for voice/data and ADS-B in space without terrestrial coverage
- Use Case 2: Use of satellite VHF for voice and ADS-B as a means of contingency/delegation.
- Use Case 3: Use of satellite VHF for voice/data and ADS-B exchange in terrestrial airspace.
