Indra strengthens its commitment to the environment by bringing forward its emission reduction targets by a decade and pledges to achieve Net Zero by 2040

Today, June 5, on the occasion of the United Nations' World Environment Day, Indra is announcing its achievements and its efforts to curb climate change and protect the planet. The company has brought forward its science-based emission reduction targets by a decade, renewed and extended its ISO 14001 environmental certification, and drawn up an ambitious and realistic climate transition plan for all of the group’s activities, while it continues to drive the development of technological solutions to curb global warming and protect our environment.

Innovation and technology are the key to achieving sustainable development and Indra has solutions to help our customers progress in this regard, with increasingly eco-efficient products and sysems to make air traffic and transportation less polluting, facilitate the transition to a low-carbon economy and protect natural resources with AI or from space”, declared Manuel Ausaverri, Indra’s Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) and the group’s head of Sustainability.

In 2020, Indra, the world’s most sustainable technology company (according to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index) and one of the leading companies in the fight against climate change (according to the Carbon Disclosure Project), assumed the UN’s climate goals to keep the rise in the global temperature below 1.5ºC, in accordance with the science-based targets initiative (SBTi). It also set itself the goals of reducing its energy consumption emissions by 50% by 2030, reaching zero emissions in this area by 2040 and extending decarbonization throughout its supply chain to become completely carbon neutral by 2050.

As a result of the measures implemented in recent years, the company has reduced its emissions by 26% in just four years and brought these goals forward by ten years so as to neutralize the emissions of its operations by 2030 and become Net Zero by 2040; in other words, it will reduce all of the emissions in its value chain to as close to zero as technically possible, negating the remaining emissions and achieving neutrality not solely through offsetting measures.
 
The company’s improved energy efficiency, its use of green energy, which already accounts for 88% of the group’s demands, its remote working measures, an internal carbon price that includes the CO2 factor in its decision-making, driving contracts with greener suppliers and training them to calculate their emissions, and taking into account eco-design criteria to reduce the environmental impact of its products have all contributed to speeding up its decarbonization roadmap.

This year Indra was included in the list of the Europe’s Climate Leaders that most reduced greenhouse gas emissions, drawn up by the Financial Times and the research company Statista, and in which Indra was ranked as the number one Spanish technology company and number five in Europe in emissions reduction.

ISO 14001 certification

A key role has also been played by the ISO 14001 environmental management certification, which Indra recently renewed to cover its main production centers and offices: 34 work centers in Spain, the United Kingdom, Italy, Portugal, Colombia, Brazil and Peru, a total of 29 group companies in seven countries and 100% of the manufacturing centers in Spain. Therefore, 81% of the 57,000-plus Indra and Minsait professionals worldwide work at environmentally certified centers, while 96% of them do so in Spain.

To achieve this certification it’s necessary to undergo an audit carried out by AENOR to ensure compliance with the environmental legislation and the application of the best practices, with high standards regarding issues such as carbon emissions, energy consumption, waste management, water use and employees’ environmental awareness.

Indra has also renewed the European EMAS Regulation (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) for its offices in Alcobendas and obtained the Carbon Footprint certifications (ISO 14064) for its main companies.
