Indra leads the consortium of nine companies that, through this project, will address innovation in transportation, the Internet of the future, energy efficiency, environmental sustainability and the relationship between citizens and their city.
Aside from integrating different fields and technologies, the main innovation of CIUDAD 2020 is the study of urban citizen behaviour as a basis for offering services adapted to needs.
With a budget of €16.3 million, it is one of the first industrial research projects within the INNPRONTA Programme of the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness' Centre for Technological Industrial Development (CDTI).
The objective of the CIUDAD 2020 project is to develop a new smart city model that is ecologically and economically sustainable, in which the analysis of real citizen demands along with the communication opportunities offered by the Internet and the growing number of devices connected to the web, are the basis for offering public services that are adapted to user needs.
CIUDAD 2020 addresses the new model of smart cities that take advantage of the latest technologies from a multidisciplinary approach and is based on five fundamental pillars: the city connected to the Internet of the future; energy and efficiency; mobility and sustainable transportation through the application of intelligent transportation systems (ITS); environmental sustainability and well-being of citizens; and urban citizen behaviour and relationships with the city.
The project, with a €16.3 million budget, is one of the first research initiatives within the CDTI's INNPRONTA Programme. Indra, the top IT multinational in Spain and one of the leaders in Europe, is at the head of a consortium formed by the companies Ferrovial Agromán, Atos, Fagor Electrónica and GFI Informática, as well as the SMEs Fractalia, Daedalus, Tekia and Isoco. The consortium also includes several research groups from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Universidad de Alcalá de Henares, Universidad Carlos III, Universidad de Zaragoza, Universidad de Cantabria and Universidad de la Coruña, as well as the foundations Barcelona Digital and CI3 (Intelligent Infrastructure Innovation Centre).
Technology serving citizens
Aside from integrating various fields and technologies, the main innovation of this smart cities project is that it will base the services offered in the analysis of large scale ubiquitous data about the urban behaviour of citizens by integrating the considerable amount of digital data they leave behind throughout the city. Modelling this behaviour and gathering citizen demands in terms of transportation, energy, the environment and communication are used to provide feedback for the technologies and the services developed within the project's framework in order to adapt the interactive and accessible services offered to address real needs.
The CIUDAD 2020 project includes the design of a communication architecture for the urban setting based on what is known as the Internet of the future or the Internet of things in which technology objects are equipped so that they are able to connect with each other and exchange information. A number of developed services will be built on this architecture and a solution will be provided for the requirement of permanent communication between citizens as well as between citizens and the various elements that comprise cities of the future. As a result, it will be possible to improve the well-being of citizens through a network of intelligent and personalised urban services.
Sustainable mobility, energy efficiency and environmental control
The protagonists and recipients of the results from the CIUDAD 2020 project are citizens. They will have access to new technological tools that will allow them to make decisions related to energy consumption in homes, offices and public spaces, and also to provide incentives for the use of public transportation, which is one of the main challenges for the future of cities. A city's tourists and visitors can also benefit from many of these applications.
The project plans to develop new solutions based on intelligent transportation systems (ITS) that will minimise contaminating emissions and prevent traffic congestion as well as reduce the direct and indirect costs involved. To do so, integrated (intermodal) urban transportation services will be promoted and the adoption of the most ecological and sustainable methods of transportation will be facilitated, such as electric vehicles or non-mechanical alternatives.
CIUDAD 2020 will also research modelling and monitoring aspects related to environmental, acoustic and light contamination. In addition, the project will design tools that will allow citizens to actively manage their consumption and motivate them to contribute with their behaviour towards collaborating in the sustainable management of water and solid waste.
