- This contract added to another contract awarded in 2010 amount to € 35 M
- Kuwait will be at the forefront of air traffic management
- Indra reaffirms its solid position as a technology provider in the Gulf and Middle East
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation of Kuwait awarded Indra the implementation of an advanced controller-pilot data link communication system in Kuwait city airport. This contract joins a project awarded last year to modernise the automated air traffic management systems of the control centre and tower of this airport. Both contracts amount to € 35 M. This technology will place Kuwait at the forefront of air traffic management.
Indra’s Voice over internet protocol (VoIP) system guarantees ground-to-ground and ground-to-air voice links between controllers and pilots by including digital technology and IP communications. The solution will favour communication among air traffic controllers at the control centres, towers and the new ground/air infrastructures.
The voice communications system and the automated air traffic management system will be fully integrated, as both systems have been developed by Indra. This absolute integration will beneficial in terms of operation since it will require little changes in the configuration of the air sectors covered by air traffic management. This way the sectors can be easily organised taking into account the needs associated to the volume of air traffic at a given moment
This feature automates a task which was usually performed by air traffic controllers manually and independently. It adds fluency and coordination to management thus increasing the airport’s capacity to handle more flights.
The turnkey project includes some other additional actions such as the implementation of radio communications systems. As a consequence the communications solution implemented by Indra will be redundant and reliable which added to the technology employed will equip Kuwait with a state-of-the-art system.
In order to make the most of this technology Indra will train Kuwait's technicians and air traffic controllers.
Arabian Peninsula and Middle East
Besides the contracts awarded in Kuwait we should also mention the ambitious project underway in Oman in order to modernise the whole country's air traffic management infrastructure. This project includes the renewal of the automated management system of seven airports among other actions. In addition to this, the company is engaged in the implementation of radar surveillance systems and air traffic management systems in Jordan
On the other hand, in Saudi Arabia the company implemented a management system in a combined cycle plant of the Arab-Japanese RAWEC consortium; in Bahrain it implemented management systems for the Ministry of Electricity and Water and in the Arab Emirates it signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Mubadala, Abu Dhabi's investment vehicle, in order to establish new technological alliances.
