Indra showcases Spanish Air Traffic Management technology that conquers the world at Airspace Integration Week

This week in Madrid, Indra is highlighting its highly advanced and innovative air traffic management technology, which has enabled it to become the global benchmark company in the sector, gain the trust of the most important navigation service providers, and point to the technologies of the future to address the major challenges facing the sector.

The technological company is one of the main exhibitors and speakers at Airspace Integration Week, an event on air navigation, space, drones, and civil and military coordination organized by ATCA (Air Traffic Control Association), at which it will display some of its most cutting-edge solutions.

Indra’s CEO, José Vicente de los Mozos, took part in the launch of the event and made sure that he was the first person to visit the company's stand. “Indra is one of the world’s leaders in this sector. We have over 6,000 installations in more than 90% of the world’s countries and the flights of over 85% of passengers bear the seal of our 100% technology. But we’re ambitious and we’re continuing to strive to become the number one in the sector,” he declared.

At Indra’s stand we highlight the presence of the iFOCUCS air traffic controller position, which has been deployed at ENAIRE’s Spanish control centers and greatly facilitated the work of these professionals. Developed in partnership with the Spanish air navigation provider and boasting an ergonomic and efficient design, it provides a larger display surface and incorporates relevant information on new features for the control personnel. iFOCUCS is also key to enabling the technological evolution of the Spanish air traffic control system (SACTA) within the framework of the European iTEC alliance.

“The iTEC alliance of the seven major European air navigation providers, of which Indra is the technological partner, helps the different countries manage their airspace in a much more collaborative and integrated manner. This enhances the safety of people, smooth operations, and the punctuality of flights and travelers while reducing costs and CO2 emissions, in keeping with society’s demands,” explained Javier Ruano, managing director of Indra’s ATM (Air Traffic Management) business.

Both iTEC and the ManagAir system, which Indra exports to the five continents, incorporate trajectory calculation capabilities and facilitate traffic coordination with the pilots and military controllers of the Air Forces of each country.

Other futuristic developments currently being displayed by Indra during Airspace Integration Week include its new remote tower, capable of managing dozens of airports from a single point, and its new radars, which can mitigate the effects of wind turbines and solar energy installations, thus contributing to the advancement of renewable energies. Indra’s experts will speak during different talks on these and other advanced solutions, such as virtualization and cloud technologies that allow control centers to assign the management of their respective airspaces to each other.

With the deployment of cutting-edge systems such as these, Indra is promoting green aviation and enabling progress towards the objective set by the European Union to reduce aviation emissions by 55% by 2030 compared to1990 levels and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

A leader of the sector in terms of innovation

Many of the pioneering solutions and projects that will be required to achieve the above are stemming from the SESAR 3 program, a pan-European R&D initiative that brings together the entire aviation sector; Indra excels within it as the company with the greatest influence and the most commitment to innovation.

Two other disruptive projects that have positioned Indra at the forefront of the sector, ones which it is developing in partnership with ENAIRE, are Startical and an unmanned air traffic management (UTM) platform.

Startical seeks to put 200 small satellites into orbit to provide space-based air traffic control services to aircraft around the planet so as to enhance air safety in oceanic and remote areas and make intercontinental traffic run much more smoothly.

Together with ENAIRE, Indra is already deploying one of the most advanced unmanned air traffic management (UTM) platforms in existence. This platform will facilitate the development of a completely new sector in Spain that will lead to new services, employment, and technological know-how.
