Minsait, Iberdrola's partner in a R+D+I project financed by Next Generation EU funds to spur the energy transition with Artificial Intelligence

Minsait, an Indra company, will be Iberdrola's technology partner in IA4TES, a research project led by the energy group and financed by the EU Next Generation Funds aimed at developing artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to speed up the energy transition.

The project, which envisages a total investment of 16,2 million euros, 12.5 million of which will be financed with the funding, provides for the creation of more than 30 jobs over the next few years. In addition, it is the only proposal for the energy sector approved by the Secretary of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence under its call for "AI RDI Missions", a program that grants funds to long-term research projects submitted by consortia composed of large companies, academic institutions and SMEs. 

As the main technology partner, Minsait will take responsibility for the three work packages related to implementing advanced AI solutions in the fields of power generation, distribution and consumption: smart sustainable production, smart grids and smart consumption. In addition, it will contribute its experience and expertise to paving the way for the integration of renewable power generation into energy markets. 

Specifically, the company will coordinate projects that will study the application of smart technologies to streamline the operation and maintenance of wind and solar power assets. To this end, it will work on the development of systems that facilitate the real-time detection of operating risks and on machine learning models that predict battery failures and estimate equipment service life. 

Minsait will also lead the development of technologies that enable distribution networks to efficiently and flexibly address the inevitable spread of Distributed Energy Resources (DER). To this end, it will propose systems capable of foreseeing the short, medium and long term impact of these resources and planning for their integration by optimizing investments, as well as other solutions to anticipate the risks of failure and cross-impacts of all network components and equipment that may affect the continuity and quality of supply.

Finally, Minsait will apply artificial intelligence to the development of a new framework for energy coordination services that enable the "smart" participation of residential and commercial customers in energy markets. To this end, solutions will be studied that automatically connect customers with the electricity system in real time to make decisions that will help them reduce their bills, together with tools that provide aggregators (representatives of small consumers in the market) with sufficient capacity to coordinate the interactions of hundreds of thousands of small customers.

Minsait's participation in IA4TES foresees the development of Intelligence use cases in five of the six priorities offered by Phygital, the merging of the physical and digital worlds and one of the four strategic vectors for the company's growth. Along with analytics and artificial intelligence, Minsait will bring the project its capabilities in IoT-IT integration technologies, automation and distributed intelligence, and user and digital twin experiences and platforms.

Phygital aims to: improve the management of the physical world through digital technologies to improve the efficiency, profitability and flexibility of operations involving all types of assets, products and physical infrastructures; transform the interaction of people with the physical world, combining real information and virtual reality; and contribute to sustainability objectives in counted aspects related to carbon footprint reduction, the circular economy and social impact 

The consortium led by Iberdrola also includes the participation of nine startups: Ariadna, Balantia, Baobab, Barbara IoT, eProgram, Flexidao, Rated Power, Singlair and Stemy. It also collaborates with seven research centers and universities: Tecnalia, BCAM, the universities of Granada, Madrid Polytechnic and Salamanca, Vicomtech, and the Knowledge Engineering Institute (IIC in its Spanish initials).
